Volunteerism: The Heart of the League

The League of Women Voters relies heavily on the passion and dedication of our volunteers to carry out essential activities such as voter registration, legislative advocacy, and community engagement. Without volunteer support, we wouldn’t be able to achieve our mission.

As we prepare for a new fiscal year, including an addition of a Co-President, I wanted to express my deep appreciation for our volunteers' invaluable contributions. Your ongoing support in helping our League to recruit new volunteers is crucial. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about advocating for democracy and embody the spirit of volunteerism.

Every volunteer plays a vital role in ensuring that eligible citizens are registered to vote and actively participating in democratic processes. Your work is instrumental to our mission. Additionally, volunteering provides personal fulfillment and enhances well-being, offering a sense of belonging and connection to a greater purpose. This aligns with the broader benefits of volunteerism, promoting social inclusion and solidarity.

We invite you or anyone you know to join our League and volunteer. If you are already a member, consider volunteering. There are on-going opportunities to engage with our work, whether it is through helping with voter registration, serving on a committee, tabling at events, or participating in legislative advocacy.

We also have leadership opportunities available! If you have experience and interest in co-chairing a committee, please feel free to send me an email at allym62@gmail.com. Below are some positions we are currently recruiting for:

-- Webmaster (looking for at least two more part-timers)
-- Newsletter Temporary Editor through end of year
-- Vote411 Committee Chair
-- Legislative Advocacy Committee Chair
-- Observer Corps Committee Chair
-- Criminal Justice Committee Chair
-- Co-Chairs needed for: DEI, Education, LGBTQIA+, and Affordable Housing

Our long-term goal is to foster an environment where every volunteer feels connected to our mission and inspired by the impact we create together. This allows us to ensure that our community remains informed, engaged, and empowered to advocate for democracy.  I could not think of a better time to get on board with us!

In the meantime, I encourage each of you to actively engage in advocacy for the issues you care most about and help us to lead with purpose and an open heart.

Thank you once again for your many contributions!

With gratitude,
Ally

May General Meeting
Wednesday, May 14, 7 p.m.

The April general meeting discussed the importance of fluoride in dental health. This month we continue with the general topic of the state of dental health in Florida, a topic that we often ignore without realizing its importance to our health overall. By the time of this meeting, the Florida legislative session will have ended and we will learn more regarding which bills passed, or not, related to dental health.

Women of the Watershed: May 10 free film at library

Join us for the screening of a South Florida documentary, "Women of the Watershed" at the Southwest Regional Library on May 10 from 3 to 5 p.m.

In the film, a young woman journeys to the source of the Everglades headwaters to better understand the historic challenges of water management and pollution that now threaten this fragile ecosystem. Along the way she meets a new generation of advocates who are redefining the balance of women in conservation.

The program is a collaboration between the League, the Sierra Club, the Climate Reality Project and the Broward County Library.
