Here's a March 2022 Fort Lauderdale report on efforts regarding affording housing and homelessness.

What you can do


  • Vote for people who put Affordable Housing at the top of their priority list.  Make Affordable Housing an election issue in elections at every level.

  • Speak up! Use the LWV Broward Guide to Elected Officials. County Affordable Housing Trust Fund: We support funding the Broward County Housing Trust fund with an annual allocation of more than the $5 million now budgeted for it.
  • Contact your state representative and state senator. Ask what they can do to legislate changes for more affordable housing. Be sure that your elected official will pledge to stop sweeping hundreds of millions of dollars from the State’s Affordable Housing Fund ( the “Sadowski Fund” ) into general revenue  in 2021, and that they will also work to bring the funds paid by Broward taxpayers back to Broward, which received no state funds back this year.
  • Get in touch with elected officials in your city to find out what affordable housing solutions they are working on.
  • Join advocacy groups that work to promote a fair working wage.
  • Attend your city council meetings.  Find out about affordable housing in your city. Is there enough? What is being done to address the need – rezoning/land use changes? Understand the zoning issues in your city and what can be changed to alleviate affordable housing problems.
  • Join an advocacy organization, like the League of Women Voters/Affordable Housing Committee.
  • Talk to your neighbors. Spread the word on social media. Start a conversation about the importance of ordinary citizens speaking up to pressure leaders to work toward solutions for solving the affordable housing crisis.


Fact about affordable housing in Broward County


  • Only 12.6% of Broward households can afford the median home price of $360,000.
  • 53.9% of households in Broward are cost-burdened. Broward is the MOST cost-burdened county in the United States due to the gap between (low) wages and a high median home price.
  • A minimum wage worker in Broward has to work 87 hrs/week or have 2.7 jobs in order to afford the average rent for a modest one bedroom apartment.
  • 48% of residents in Broward are one missed paycheck away from potential homelessness.
  • ALL 31 cities in Broward County are in need of affordable housing.
  • Broward County is experiencing an affordable housing CRISIS, not just a problem.
  • As Broward’s population continues to trend older, the largest increase in homeless shelter occupants is over 85.
