On March 7, 1965, John Lewis and 600 civil rights marchers were tear gassed and viciously beaten by Alabama state and local police. “Bloody Sunday” ignited the conscience of the nation and, after too many more sacrifices, the Voting Rights Act was passed 5 months later.

In this conversation, our guests will look back at what it took to get the Voting Rights Act passed, how it expanded the vote, the ongoing attempts to subvert it, new forms of voter suppression, and how we must and we can pass voting rights legislation in 2021 to build a truly multi-racial democracy. Join us; because voting should be a right, not a fight.

Featuring:
Leigh Chapman, Senior Director of Voting Rights, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights
Andrea Miller, Founder of the Center for Common Ground
Ari Berman, is a senior reporter at Mother Jones, covering voting rights and author of Give Us the Ballot
